Lighting Industry Product Development and Management

Lighting is essential in this digital era. Lighting industry players are ever in the lookout for new developments in this sector. They are working as hard as possible to ensure that they come up with new smart technologies that have place in this digital age.

Development in technology is making conventional incandescent light bulbs almost obsolete. There are two types of lighting technologies that are poised to replace incandescent light bulbs and these include compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and light emitting diodes (LEDs). In the last few years, LED technology has experienced remarkable gains leading to improvement in the efficacy of LED lighting solutions.

There is a compelling need for lighting industry players to take initiatives in research in lighting product research and development. This will help them determine key areas that need a great deal of improvement in order for their technology to maintain in tandem with the advancing technologies. Key areas that need improvement include; advanced packaging, color stability, product reliability and product life, power supplies, and value addition.

It’s common knowledge that if lighting industry players particularly in LED technology put more capabilities in packaging, they are most likely to create cost effective lighting fixtures. Replacing the functionality in LED luminaire and then embedding it with a chip would allow it to be more cost effective and much more effectual. There needs to be more development and research about how to bring the traditional packaging structure to chip level.

There is need to change LED power supplies in the conventional fragile components such as electrolytic capacitors to stronger GaN-based power electronics that are smaller, efficient and cheaper. More development should be based on the reliability of individual components and testing their lifetime. The lighting industry players should take more emphasis on the development of additional lighting metrics that can predict and detect failures that may occur in the lighting fixtures. They should also develop products that are powers surge resistant so as to avoid the abnormalities that are caused by such surges.

Color shift in lighting systems has been a large issue in the lighting technology. There is a greater urge for the lighting industry to develop product which has color equilibrium, reliable and longer-lasting. There’s more that should be done in order to have an extensive understanding of the very acceptable color changes and mechanisms in lighting.

With all these in mind, most lighting companies can develop products that meet the current needs in lighting technology. Consequently, product management and development should take center stage in lighting the industry if players in this sector ever want to keep in line with changes in technology.
